About The Shirley Shuttle

The Shirley Shuttle commenced operation in 2008 with a donation of $50,000 from our Founder, Barb Galvin, in memory of her late mother, Shirley Galvin, after she died from cancer. This donation purchased our first vehicle, and we began operation transporting oncology clients and their carers, without viable transport alternatives, to treatment centres in Gosford and Wyong, under the administration of Community Transport Central Coast Limited.

Over the next few years our fleet grew to four vehicles and our Volunteer Driver team grew with it. With the winding up of CTCCL in late 2024, we established Shirley Shuttle Incorporated as a registered charity in NSW to ensure the longevity and success of this vital service.

Our Founder, Barb Galvin is President of the association, and our fundraiser. A crew of around thirty volunteer drivers keep our clients and their carers moving across the Central Coast, with the support of the new Central Coast Community Transport operation who handle our bookings and scheduling.

In 2024 we completed over 9000 trips to ensure our clients received their life saving treatments. Our organisation is entirely staffed by volunteers.

By supporting Shirley Shuttle Inc through financial contributions or by offering your time and skills as a volunteer driver, you can help address the ever growing need for cancer client transport on the Central Coast. Donations over $2 are tax deductible in Australia.

How Our Service Works:

Our Founder, Barb Galvin is President of the association, and our fundraiser. A crew of around thirty volunteer drivers keep our clients and their carers moving across the Central Coast, with the support of the new Central Coast Community Transport operation who handle our bookings and scheduling.

We will pick you up from your door at the time you were notified (via text message the day before your appointment). If you could be ready ten minutes prior to your pickup time, we would appreciate it. Please keep in mind that we may be picking up one or two other clients on your in-trip – we try to keep our vehicles full to minimise cost. This may mean a longer journey than a direct trip to your treatment center; the same applies for your home trip.

You will be asked to make a $20 per person (client or carer) contribution towards running costs for each return trip, payable on pickup for your in-trip. Please have the correct change ready to give the driver, as they don’t carry change.

Card payments are now available, and are encouraged. You will simply tap your Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card (or Apple Pay/ Google Pay device) on the phone in our vehicle to make your payment via the Tyro app.

Our drivers can also accept donations to Shirley Shuttle Incorporated if you feel so inclined. We are an entirely voluntary association, and exist via the generosity of our donors.

If you are experiencing financial hardship, please let us know, we don’t want any of our clients to miss their treatments.

While we make every effort to get you to your treatment by the appointed time, we can’t always make this happen. Traffic, weather, and unforeseen holdups can all cause delays. Our drivers will call you on your nominated phone number if we are running more than fifteen minutes behind schedule. The treatment centres are all very accommodating and understand late arrivals can happen, so please don’t get too concerned about this.

For operational reasons, our service operates for treatment appointments between 9am and 3pm. If your appointment falls outside of these hours, you can either ask the center to adjust the time to accommodate your Shirley Shuttle transport, or make alternative arrangements to attend via Community Transport, taxi etc.

If you wish to contact us directly, you can email us at info@shirleyshuttleinc.org.au, or phone the booking number (02 4355 4588) and leave a message so we can phone you back.

We hope you enjoy your travel with us, it’s our pleasure to be of service to you.
